It's time to give new life to old denim pieces. The UN PAÍS UNIDO association and upcycling brand ONES have teamed up to create the “Recicla tu Jeans” initiative and plan to collect more than 40,000 old jeans to give them a second life and reduce their negative impact on the environment. Once collected, the jeans will be sorted: those in excellent condition will be sent to vulnerable people, and the rest will be recycled.
Experts estimate that 300 million jeans are produced worldwide each year, and only 3% of them are recycled. The life expectancy of this piece of clothing is 8 years, but usually in today's world we buy new ones much faster. Therefore, most jeans left at collection points are usually in excellent condition. The textile industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. Pollution is not just limited to the production of the product, clothing disposal also takes a huge toll on the planet.
Let's take care of the planet together!
